Q&A
Q1: What kind of martial art is Aikido?
Aikido is a modern martial art that was founded by its founder, Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), after he mastered the mysteries of traditional Japanese martial arts and underwent rigorous spiritual training. In Aikido, one does not compete with one's opponent over strength. The aim is to hone one's mind and body through training that involves mutual improvement using techniques born from the movement of the body in entrances and turns and from breathing power. Furthermore, because Aikido does not involve competing with others over superiority or inferiority, there are no matches or competitions. Q2: I have no experience in martial arts. Is that okay?
Most members start as beginners with no prior martial arts experience. Through continued practice, they are able to acquire Aikido movements in a natural way.
Q3: I am busy with work and may not be able to make it to the start time. Can I still practice?
People's living environments vary depending on their work, studies, etc. Therefore, we can start practice according to the time that you can participate.
Q4: Can I observe (experience) a rehearsal?
Please apply from "Home - Contact Us". You can also check the practice days on the "Schedule", so you can come directly to the dojo. Observation and trial are free. Please wear long sportswear (clothing that covers your elbows and knees).
Q5: If I observe (trial) a practice, do I have to join?
You can join once you have tried it several times and are convinced that you can continue on an ongoing basis.
Q6: Where can I buy a judo uniform?
After joining, we will support members in purchasing a uniform for beginners. In recent years, it is common for members to purchase their uniform online. (※Hakama can be worn by men with a shodan rank or higher, and women with a sankyu rank or higher.)
Q7: What is the atmosphere like at the meeting?
Just as all martial arts begin and end with a bow, everyone takes training seriously. However, the training is not too strict, and students freely consult with each other to improve their own weaknesses and hone their skills. For beginners, advanced trainees will provide careful instruction, focusing on basic movements such as etiquette and ukemi.
Q8: Are there ranks or grades like in judo and kendo?
In the general classes, students are examined from 5th grade to 4th grade and promoted (examinations from 5th grade onwards are by recommendation). From 1st grade onwards, students wear black belts and hakama. By taking examinations according to the grade, students can concretely demonstrate the results of their daily training, confirm their own progress and increase their motivation. In addition, in the junior classes, students start from quasi-10th grade depending on their level.
Q9: I'm worried about my age. Will it be okay?
We have members who started Aikido after turning 60. Aikido is based on natural and effortless movements and does not require any special strength, so anyone with the desire to learn can do it.
Q10: What measures are you taking to prevent infection with COVID-19?
We take our temperature regularly and strive to manage our health. If you are infected with COVID-19, have influenza, have a temperature of 37.5°C or higher, or have cold symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, or abnormalities in taste or smell, you will not be able to participate in practice. We always disinfect our hands when entering and leaving the dojo. In addition, to prevent heatstroke, we encourage frequent hydration and breaks during practice. As of March 13, 2023, wearing masks during practice will be left to the individual's discretion. (*If you are infected with COVID-19, you will not be able to participate in practice for 10 days from the date you test positive.)
